U.S.-Kenya Freedom 250 Tech and Innovation Exchange

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION 1. Project Background, Goals, and Objectives Project Background In honor of America's 250th anniversary and Freedom 250 celebrations of American excellence, the U.S. Embassy in Kenya announces a new academic exchange through the U.S. Department of State focused on science, technology, and engineering, which are fields of the future for both American global leadership and U.S.-Kenya bilateral ties. Through the Freedom 250 Tech and Innovation Exchange, we will catalyze and grow targeted linkages between U.S. and Kenyan universities in sectors that advance American strength and prosperity. Program Goals: Embed Rising Scientists and Engineers in American-led Tech and Business Ecosystems: Provide 76 Kenyan undergrads with a high-quality experience of American tech education through a junior-year semester of study at U.S. universities, thereby establishing their personal and professional connections with the United States and within American operating systems. Advance the Dominance of U.S. Universities and American Innovation in Kenya's Tech Sector : Establish and strengthen cooperation between U.S. and Kenyan higher education institutions with a focus on collaborative research that will provide an advantage to American economic priorities and business interests in Kenya and Africa more broadly. Build a Prestigious Brand to Honor America's 250th Anniversary: Establish the Freedom 250 Tech and Innovation Exchange as a prestigious and recognizable brand associated with excellence in U.S.-Kenya collaboration, launching a new generation of Kenyan leaders motivated to partner with America and advance U.S. commercial interests in Africa. Project Audience(s): This program targets high-potential Kenyan undergraduate students aged 18–26 years in science, technology, engineering, and innovation fields who demonstrate leadership potential in industries most relevant to American commercial interests and U.S.-Kenya bilateral cooperation. The U.S. Embassy in Kenya will coordinate with the program implementer and American private-sector leaders in Kenya’s ICT market on candidate selection. This selection process will deliver participants with the talent, motivation, foundational skills, and commitment required to partner with the United States and ensure value for American economic interests in Kenya and Africa more broadly. Project Goal: Embed rising scientists and engineers in American-led tech and business ecosystems, advance the dominance of U.S. universities and innovation in Kenya's tech sector, and build a prestigious brand to honor America's 250th anniversary, thereby launching a new generation of Kenyan leaders who are motivated to partner with America, advance U.S. commercial interests in Africa, and bolster overall bilateral ties in support of American global leadership and economic prosperity. Project Objectives: Completion of a semester at U.S. universities: Seventy-six Kenyan undergrads, selected for their leadership potential in industries most relevant to American commercial interests, complete a semester at U.S. universities. Completion of externships: Through externships with American companies back in Kenya immediately following their U.S. semester of study, participants will develop a strong understanding of American business needs in Africa. Pro-American Alumni: Undergraduates who participate in the Freedom 250 Tech and Innovation Exchange will become a proud cohort of Kenyan leaders who strengthen U.S.-Kenya ties, advocate for economic cooperation with the United States, and increase Kenya's collaboration with American research institutions, universities, and businesses operating in Africa. University Partnerships: Participating U.S. universities will develop long-term ties with Kenyan institutions in strategic fields, from information technology and AI to health innovation to critical minerals development. American Dominance: Freedom 250 becomes a brand name exemplifying the overwhelming value of Kenya and Africa partnering with America. Past U.S. government programs that can serve as a reference for this targeted bilateral exchange include the Global UGRAD program. This new Freedom 250 Innovation and Tech Exchange only facilitates one semester rather than an entire academic year in America; this program is entirely bilateral in nature and laser-focused on American economic and commercial interests in Africa; and this program includes a dedicated substantial private-sector element back in Kenya’s ICT market, which ensures strengthened U.S.-Kenya ties and American-interest outcomes in Kenya immediately following the program.
